Days 3 & 4: Mowani Mountain Camp, Twyfelfontein, DamaralandTransfer by private light aircraft to Mowani Mountain Camp. Mowani Mountain Camp, which is taken from the Swahili word M’wane “Place of God”, lies in an area of astounding beauty in the heart of Damaraland between the Ugab and Huab rivers. Discreetly built high up amongst massive red granite boulders the lodge provides unsurpassed views over the vast unspoilt wilderness with magnificent desert scenery, a unique variety of desert flora and fauna and fascinating geological formations and archaeological sites. |
Mowani’s main complex, which consists of a cluster of thatched dome shaped structures, is very unusual as the style of architecture echos the shape of the surrounding boulders. The sides of the bar, lounge and dining areas have been left open thus giving the complex a cool feel even on the hottest day.
Accommodation is in luxury East Africa-style safari tents built on raised wooden platforms hidden away amongst the boulders. A canvas-covered veranda at the entrance of the tent enables guest to enjoy views of the rugged landscape. Bathroom facilities consist of a shower, washbasin and w.c. Some of the tents have outside showers and the honeymoon tent has a magnificent outdoor bathroom which has been built around boulders, the view from the bath must rate as one of the best in Africa. The tents and public areas are all tastefully furnished with a mixture of carvings and artefacts from neighbouring African countries. |
Tucked away in a quiet corner amongst giant boulders and rocks, the plunge pool with its wooden deck provides a welcome respite on hot days. In the evening sundowners are taken at an enormous flat boulder with a rocky overhang that serves as a bar. From here there is a spectacular view of the Aba-Huab Valley and distant mountains, which provides an awesome setting for truly memorable sunsets. After an excellent three-course dinner, guests can enjoy the stillness of the night under a blanket of stars in front of an open fire. Mowani is ideally situated for guests to visit Twyfelfontein, with its wealth of rock art, The Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes. |
A popular optional excursion is an early morning guided nature drive to search for the desert Elephants that may be found in either the Huab or Aba-Huab valleys. It is impossible to leave Mowani without having experienced a sense of peace and a feeling of true tranquillity. |
