On safari in Namibia at Vogelstrausskluft, guests can see the stars like never before, explore the canyon uniquely, take game drives or tour the many attractions nearby.
Vogelstrausskluft Lodge is situated on a 26 000 hectare farm stocked with a variety of game such as Kudu, Oryx and other antelope species, Ostrich, Zebra and Wildebeest. Guests might also see the Rooikat or Caracal. There are Leopards but they are seldom seen.
Here, on safari in Namibia, there is surprising life and growth, many animals and plants find ways to survive. Vogelstrausskluft provides a safe habitat for both small and large animals in diverse landscapes.
Guests at Vogelstrausskluft will find peace and relaxation by the plunge pool or in the many sitting areas around the lodge. There is a spacious bar and lounge, library and reading room with boadband internet connection. The views from here are a delight.
The restaurant is open daily offering traditional African cuisine with breakfast, 3 course lunch and dinner buffet served to guests and day visitors.
Game and Nature Drives
These are offered in the morning and evening along the Fish River Canyon rim, guests can take in the 360 degree views.
Guided hikes
For a closer look at desert life in the beautiful light of early morning and evening, these hikes take place in the vicinity of the lodge in to the old valley and the edge of the plateau.
Sightseeing
Vogelstrausskluft is located in a very convenient position for guests wanting to explore southern Namibia. Places of great interest include the ghost town of Kolmannskoppe, the Kokerboom forest, Giants Playground, Aus and its desert horses, Luderitz, the white dunes of the Namib and Ais Ais hot springs to mention only a few. They are within reach for a single day excursion.
Fish River Canyon experiences
Guests at Vogelstrausskluft will have a unique advantage with exclusive access to the canyon floor which is not experienced elsewhere except in the Ais Ais Nature Reserve where a permit is required. At Vogelstrausskluft access can be on foot or by 4 x 4.
Full day Canyon Experience:
1. This full day excursion with a 4 x 4 vehicle travels through the rough landscape of the Canyon Plains and then down into the Fish River Canyon. It includes a Nature Drive through the Canyon Plains, and alongside the escarpment of the Canyon, visiting several view points one of which is 'Finger Klip'.
2. There is a 300 metre descent into the Fish River Canyon with the 4 x 4 vehicle.
3. Later guests will have a Bush Lunch at the banks of the Fish River followed by a drive back to Vogelstrausskluft Lodge.
Camping excursions:
These tours need to be booked at least 4 weeks in advance and are a once in a lifetime adventure. Guests must be physically fit. During the summer these excursions are weather dependent.
2 day Canyon Adventure
1. A 4 x 4 tour with a short hike, guests go on a Nature Drive through the Canyon Plains travelling alongside the escarpment of the Canyon with visits to several view points including 'Finger Klip'.
2. After a Bush Lunch in the Canyon Plains there is an adventure hike through 'Donker Kloof', a most beautiful and narrow side gorge of the Canyon. Later there is a 300 metre descent with the 4 x 4 vehicle into the Fish River Canyon at the Loewen River mouth.
3. Guests can relax with an Open sky dinner (African Braai) at the bush camp before retiring to their tents inside the Canyon.
4. Next day, guests will ascend to the Canyon Plains and drive to the Canyon Rim. There is a hike over a 100 year old pass of the German Schutztruppe to the Plateau; this is followed by a Bush Lunch with a view over the Fish River Canyon.
5. The rest of the day will be taken up with a drive to the mostly dry waterfall at 'Sabi Pits', visiting various view points of the constantly changing Canyon and finally returning to Vogelstrausskluft Lodge.
3 day Canyon Limits
1. A combined hiking and 4 x 4 tour in which guests transfer to the viewpoint at the Canyon Rim and then hike down to the Canyon Plains, to the old Koubis farmhouse for some exploration and relaxation in the area.
2. Guests can enjoy an Open sky dinner (African Braai) at the bush camp before retiring to their tents beneath palm trees at the old farm house.
3. Next day there is a 4 x 4 transfer over the Canyon Plains and an adventure hike through 'Donker Kloof', a most beautiful and narrow side gorge of the Canyon (4 to 5 hours).
4. Guests will then return to the camp at the old farm house by 4 x 4 for a Bush Lunch followed by a Nature Drive through the Canyon Plains alongside the escarpment of the Canyon, visiting several view points including 'Finger Klip'.
5. Later there is a 300 metre descent with the 4 x 4 vehicle into the Fish River Canyon at the Loewen River mouth followed by an Open sky dinner (African Braai) at the bush camp, guests can then retire to their tents inside the Canyon.
6. Next day, guests ascend to the Canyon Plains for a 4 x 4 tour to 'Perdeskoon Lookout' in the south of Vogelstrausskluft, where the Canyon forms a spectacular slope, followed by a drive to see the mostly dried out waterfall at 'Sabi Pits'.
7. After a Bush Lunch with a view over the Fish River Canyon, guests hike over a 100 year old pass of the German Schutztruppe to the Plateau before the final transfer back to Vogelstrausskluft Lodge
